One Room Challenge Week 2: Bathroom DEMO

Week 2 of the One Room Challenge is here! Here's our bathroom update. Check out our original post if you want to see our bathroom plans and our first week blog.

This week is DEMO WEEK. We got a quote for our bathroom for $13,000 (only bath/shower area) and we decided to DIY the whole thing. Jonathan is the manpower behind this demo week. Here's what we've (Jonathan) done so far!

TILE REMOVAL

Earlier this year, I painted our bathroom floor using a hexagon stencil and floor paint. Well, we said goodbye to our flooring and Jonathan ripped the tiles out. It was a lot easier than we expected to pop out the tiles—the floors are 20 years old, and Jonathan used a crowbar to lift them up and out.

So now the floor is all gone and ready for our new flooring (we picked out some from Floor & Decor).

The new flooring and grout. Isn't it beautiful?

BATH/SHOWER REMOVAL

The biggest part of this week was removing our bath/shower combo. It was an old plastic-type pre-built bath and shower, and we just jumped into it, not knowing what to expect. Jonathan cut into the wall around the bathtub first and cut into the caulk to remove the tub.

After some cutting around, he was able to pull it away from the wall. He then used his jigsaw to cut the bathtub directly in half! We then carried it away and did the same with the shower.

So now we have exposed pipes and studs, no more faucets or shower heads, and virtually no more bathroom! It feels great to have the old pieces out. We brought the new bathtub in from the garage so we could prepare for this next week of install.

VANITY REMOVAL

The vanity was the last major piece to remove (the toilet and medicine cabinet were pretty easy!) We have a new vanity from Costco that's been sitting in our room for 3+ months. So I am getting really excited for the new pieces to go in! But demo week and the next few weeks ahead are messy, messy, messy.

Jonathan disconnected the faucets and checked the plumbing before pulling the vanity away from the wall. He worked on the countertop first and we removed that together. We decided not to try and save the bathroom vanity—we could have sold it or donated it, but it was difficult to keep in one piece. So we hammered it down and ripped it to shreds.

I want to close up the wall where the medicine cabinet was, so we took out the medicine cabinet as well. This is definitely the "dirty work" week, but it's necessary.

Stay tuned for all NEW things being installed, including building out the bath/shower, putting in FLOORING, and more! Here is our new bath that was delivered from Amazon:

Now we have a blank slate to start from scratch! Hopefully the next few weeks come together and we can bring the new vanity, tiles, and flooring into this room.
